Hawaiian Lei Making Workshop

Hawaiian Lei Making Workshop In-Person

Join us for an authentic Hawaiian lei-making workshop (with materials from Hawaii) facilitated by dancer and choreographer Christopher K. Morgan (he/him) in partnership with the Nurture Nature Center and the Williams Center for the Arts - Performance Series at Lafayette College.

In this community engagement workshop, participants learn the Hawaiian lei-making technique of hilo (twisting). Using Hawaiian ti leaves, each participant creates a small lei to take home. Participants then share stories about their identities, sense of belonging, home, and ancestry— all relevant themes from the performance Native Intelligence/Innate Intelligence. These stories remain private, as they are written on large pieces of fabric that are then twisted into a large-scale lei, which becomes part of the performance set.

Currently about 80 feet long, the lei grows with each workshop. The workshop is open to all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. To date, children, teens, adults, and seniors have participated—including engineering students from a Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York, staff from an immigration service organization in Maryland, and textile artists in rural Maine.

There is no cost for this workshop.    All ages are welcome to attend.
